Notes:

• Of note this month was an above average occurrence of adult Sabine's Gulls in the interior.
• Yellow-footed Gull numbers in Imperial County, California appear to have reached record lows for the month. Once recorded here by the hundreds in August, the species may soon become a rare sighting at the Salton Sea due to the almost complete collapse of fish populations here. 
• A Super El Niño is underway and observers should watch for extraordinary gulls from the southeast Pacific. Swallow-tailed Gull and Gray Gull seem particularly prone to movement during these events, but Gray-hooded, Kelp, Yellow-footed, and Heermann's should also be expected in unexpected regions.

Notes: 

1. On 07 May 2026, Joachim Bertrands reported 22,400 Sabine's Gulls offshore on the Canadian side of Swiftsure Bank (British Columbia). The report describes the sighting "like locusts" with a presence of 30,000+ birds likely.
    
2. On 12 May 2026, Josh Spice, reported the same apparent female type Ring-billed Gull in Fairbanks, Alaska, paired up with a Short-billed Gull. No nest found although the two birds were recorded copulating. It must be noted that the bill pattern and wingtip pattern are both inconsistent with a typical Ring-billed, and thus, the presumption that some Short-billed influence is at work might be considered.

Notes: 

1. The Manitoba Slaty-backed Gull was found some 1,000 miles away in the Fort McMurray, Alberta area just eight days after it was last seen in Manitoba. This is a fascinating data point several reasons: 1) It is the first record for the Fort McMurray region, 2) It reinforces just how much distance gulls are capable of covering in a short period, and 3) The bird is presumably on a northwest trajectory, as it should be.  

2. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin Kelp Gull has returned for another breeding season. First detected in the summer of 2024 and well-documented in the summer of 2025, this is now year 3 of it nesting in an American Herring Gull colony. 

3. At least 3 Western Gulls were reported in the interior West this month, following a pattern of increased reports away from the Pacific Coast in recent years. Whether the species is undergoing a period of exploratory behavior that will evolve into range expansion, or simply coincidence, remains to be seen.

• Much like the last couple of months, a gentle incursion of Short-billed Gulls and Glaucous-winged Gulls continued in the East. Whether the latter come from the North American continent or Asia -- or both -- is impossible to know. 
• The adult Common Gull found in Lake County, Illinois on 14 February 2026, showed multiple characteristics consistent with the Russian taxon, Larus canus heinei. Experts who are firmly familiar with heinei agree it conforms to that race, which would prove to be the first verifiable record of Russian Common Gull in the Western Hemisphere.

Notes:

• An interesting 2nd cycle type Laughing Gull was found at the Brownsville Landfill in Cameron County, Texas this month. Photos from 08 January 2026 can be found here.
  
  There are two options for this bird: melanistic Laughing Gull, and less likely, a hybrid Laughing x Gray Gull.
  
  A pure Gray Gull can be dismissed for a number of reasons, first and foremost by the dark secondary tips which should be white-tipped in 2nd basic and beyond.
  
  Melanistic gulls, including melanistic Laughing Gulls, are very rare, and when they are found there is usually some white pigments on the underwing and the body.
  
  Hybrids are also rare, and to my knowledge, this pairing has not been recorded. However, given that the Florida Gray Gull now seems to be locked into North America, we have to give serious consideration to the possibility of a few Laughing x Gray Gull hybrids roaming the Gulf Coast. The timing is perfect, seeing that the Florida Gray Gull has been in our midst since at least June 2023. The two, Laughing Gull and Gray Gull, are in the same genus and it's not a long shot to imagine this pairing (Laughing Gull has hybridized with much more unexpected species, including Ring-billed Gull, Black-headed Gull and Gray-hooded Gull). This image in particular of the Texas bird, with chocolate-brown aspect -- not sooty-gray -- is very reminiscent of Gray Gull.
  
  At any rate, it seems likely that the 1st cycle found here last year and accepted as a Texas first state record Gray Gull is the same individual (although impossible to know for certain). That record, of course, will need to be reevaluated.

I'll be expanding on and detailing concepts you're reading about in the book, beginning with establishing a foundation for molt and plumage, and hopefully apply some of these ideas to identification.

For such birds, we use the terms "adult type" or "subadult" to qualify what we're seeing. Notes:

1. An adult three-cycle gull, apparently from the Common Gull complex, was recorded in St. Charles County, Missouri on 07 December 2025. Originally suspected of being a Short-billed Gull, this individual showed unusually dark upperparts and a wingtip pattern that suggests an Old World taxon situated between Larus canus kamtschatschensis and Larus canus heinei. No identification has been made as the images are difficult to interpret. In any event, it is an extraordinary bird that should likely constitute a 1st State Record "Common Gull". See plates 17A.27-17A.28 in The Gull Guide for comparison.

Featured Highlights November 2025

Welcome to Featured Highlights, November 2025. This video series aims to highlight ideas found in The Gull Guide - North America. I'll be expanding on and detailing concepts you're reading about in the book, beginning with establishing a foundation for molt and plumage, and hopefully apply some of these ideas to identification. 

An obvious element of gull ID rests in how we perceive and describe the varied patterns found in their plumages, particularly their upperparts. This is not unique to gulls, but it seems to weigh on beginners as they familiarize themselves with the creative words used in the literature. Video 11 discusses some of the patterns that we find on the scapulars, wing coverts and tertials of young, large-whited gulls in 1st cycle.

Vega Gull is now treated as a full species by most taxonomies around the world, and this has resulted in increased interest in their identification. Video 10 discusses some of the caveats and pitfalls in identifying 1st cycles, comparing them largely to our more expected American Herring Gull

Lesser Black-backed Gull's expansion throughout North America is truly an enigma with zero nesting records found in the US and Canada. Fortunately, their identification is less of a mystery, with the exception of juveniles (1st cycles) which can sometimes present some confusion with the more common American Herring Gull. Video 9 highlights some of the key features used to separate the two.

Featured Highlights - August 2025

I'll be expanding on and detailing concepts you're reading about in the book, beginning with establishing a foundation for molt and plumage, and hopefully apply some of these ideas to identification. 

This 8th video compares the key features found in juvenile Ring-billed, California and American Herring Gulls. Note that a juvenile is a "1st cycle", but the term juvenile is reserved for those individuals that show no systematic molt. This is the perfect time of year to reacquaint ourselves with these recently fledged Larus species.
