Ethan Gyllenhall and I birded the Calumet River on Saturday, recording some of our best numbers of white-wingers this season. Between the Calumet River and then a shorter visit to Whiting Beach, we found:
- 9 Thayer's (4 adults, 1 third cycle, 2 second cycle, 2 first cycle).
- 4 Kumlien's (3 adults, 1 first cycle*).
- 11 Glaucous Gulls (all ages).
- 37 Great Black-backed (no 3rd cycles).
- 1 Lesser Black-backed (whew!).
It could be that some of the Glaucous and Great Black-backeds are recounts that were seen at both sites. Incidentally, we observed "the" 1st cycle Kumlien's at both sites - a treat indeed!
